Meedar (fishing hook in Arabic) is an IOT based solution based on AWS technologies, that provides real-time and automated readings of temperature and oxygen saturation level at all tanks at once. The solution provides an early alert/notification system that triggers digital and physical actions if temperature and oxygen saturation level reach the low or high predefined parameters. The early alert and notification help mitigate losing fingerlings as the survival rate is very low and around 10% only.
Until today, the Fish Hatchery at the Aquaculture company suffers from high cost of the manual labor and time taken to monitor and maintain the temperature and oxygen saturation level at 42 fish tanks. This occurs when they manually measure and collect the temperature & oxygen level and pump switching, which is a quite a challenge due to the large number of tanks and unnecessary need of increased manpower. The current manual system causes multiple problems which are high mortality rate of fingerlings, high cost and high amount of labor needed.
In Collaboration between AWS and BP CIC, the ICT and Engineering students at BP developed Meedar (fishing hook in Arabic). Meedar is an IOT solution based on AWS technologies, that provides real-time and automated readings of temperature and oxygen saturation level at all tanks at once. The solution provides an early alert/notification system on an interactive visual dashboard that triggers digital and physical actions if temperature and oxygen saturation level reach the low or high predefined parameters. The early alert and notification help mitigate losing fingerlings as the survival rate is very low and around 10% only. The solution has also a control panel/system that is automatically opens and closes valves and pumps to maintain the green level predefined oxygen and temperature levels, and sending notification to the supervisor’s mobile whenever an alert or notification is triggered. An additional feature is also enabled with voice activated Alexa and Amazon Echo show for visualizing the health of the tanks visually.
” The Aquaculture company is passionate and committed to enhance and support food safety across Bahrain. Meedar is here to give the Fish Hatchery a vehicle to accelerate their journey to Digital Transformation,” said Mike Bainbridge, EMEA Cloud Innovation Centers leader at AWS. ” we want Aquaculture company to tap into latest AWS technologies to solve their real-world problems and increase survival rate for fingerlings, increase their revenue and cut their cost with efficiency and automation”.
The fish hatchery supervisor tested Meedar at 2 tanks for oxygen saturation level and temperature as a start. The supervisor has an Amazon Echo Show terminal on his desk with Alexa and dashboard integrated to enquire by voice about temperature, oxygen and any sudden change at the tanks. The supervisor also has a visual dashboard to monitor and maintain the green level of temperature and oxygen saturation level at the tanks. The system is developed on Amazon IOT Greengrass that keeps ingesting sensors’ data in real time to the dashboard. If any sudden change in temperature or oxygen level happens, Lambda triggers a notification to the supervisor mobile and triggers an automated pump and actuators to pump water that increases or decreases the temperature or pump oxygen depending on the reading from the sensors.
“It was an eye opener working closely with AWS and BP to develop Meedar ” said Bassam Alshuwaikh Director of Fish Hatchery and the Ministry of Municipalities” The mortality rate of fingerlings is around 90%, with Meedar we are now able to increase the survival rate from 10% to 15%, which means a 50% increase in fish supply to the Bahraini market and great support to food safety across Bahrain”.
Meedar is available for pilot at the remote tanks with additional power and communication tools to make sure of the remote sites benefit from the system.
Through the dashboard or the customized Alexa skill using voice commands.
